As Lonely As Dave Bowman – Monolith coverBlack Tape For A Blue Girl has done it again…well Sam, at least, is bringing us a brand new dark ambient project titled As Lonely As Dave Bowman. These few tracks tell the story of Dave Bowman, the astronaut from Kubrick/Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Monolith is the soundtrack for the final four months of Dave’s journey to Jupiter.

The album starts out asking for your support of the arts on Bandcamp; with just $4 you can download the whole EP. On the first music track, “Failure of the AE-35 unit Radio antenna,” you have a mellow and almost ominous feel, almost like you are floating off into sound waves. The sparse breathing of the keys gives an almost empty feeling as you continue reaching for that something, that void just as you get to the second track, “Moon-skimmer.”

So far the album has lived up to its project’s name: lonely.

It’s more about the internal struggle than the external; the oddity of darkness and ones inner-self. If you have ever wondered what it would sound like in your head to travel abroad alone, this is a great album to put your headphones on and listen to; though I did find some of “Moon-skimmer” to bring up some almost anxious and progressive feelings of claustrophobia.

“A long, dark corridor filled with lights. A memory. And then a bright room with air” is the last track. You finally reached a speck of something bright in this one before plunging straight back into the abyss, and as you take your last breath, the void shrouds you in darkness and carries you away.

This album does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Dave.
